Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy: A Safer, Easier Birth
July 21, 2008
Many
People never think to go to a Chiropractor during
Pregnancy. Our primary focus is on restoring nerve
flow so the body can heal and function at 100%. The
same goes for women pre-pregnancy, throughout
pregnancy, and post pregnancy. The pregnant woman’s
body now has to support and provide for two. The
woman’s body undergoes many changes during pregnancy;
one significant change is the spine and pelvis. The
spine and pelvis must adapt and change to compensate
for the growing baby. Specific chiropractic care
throughout pregnancy works with enhancing nervous
system function, thus providing greater health for
both mom and baby.
When the spine and pelvis displace out of their normal spinal alignment, chiropractors refer to this as a subluxation. When this occurs during pregnancy, it is primarily caused by the stress and trauma of the changing positions of the bones. When the spine and pelvis subluxate, this causes an imbalance in the woman’s pelvic muscles and ligaments. This constraint restricts the baby’s positions during pregnancy and affects the development of the baby’s spine and cranium. These limitations on the baby’s movement prevent him/her from getting into the best possible position for birth. These positions lead to longer more painful labors with increased medical intervention in birth.
Chiropractors are trained to remove these subluxations from the spine and pelvis restoring nerve flow and allowing the muscles and ligaments around the sacrum to be in the best position. With these adjustments, it allows the baby to get into the best possible position for birth. With the proper position of the baby, the mother will have a shorter less labor and a less traumatic birth for the baby.
Being pregnant myself, I have seen this absolutely true as I get adjusted many times a week. My body and nerve flow are clearly functioning better and hopefully my labor will go more smoothly because of it. If you know anyone who is pregnant and not getting adjusted, make sure they give us a call!
